Makar Sankranti is the term for the Hindu harvest
festival, in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka,
Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Orissa, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
and West Bengal. It commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and the
termination of winter. It is one of the few Hindu Indian festivals which are
celebrated on the fixed date of 14 January each year.
